Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

At Woodlands Primary School, our approach to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) is built on the foundation that every child is a unique individual. We strive to empower them to reach their full potential, regardless of their starting point or specific needs.

We believe that our high ordinarily available provision (see below) that we offer at Woodlands ensures that as many children as possible achieve and thrive. However, if this provision is still not supporting children to meet their full potential then we work to identify barriers early within a child's journey. We then create personalised pupil centred plans (PCPs) to give measurable targets and small steps to success and communicate this to parents regularly. Targeted support and intervention runs alongside these plans and can involve external agency support and expertise such as speech and language, vision and audiology support services and educational psychologists. In addition, we have in school support spaces such as our pastoral room (Rainbow Room), EYFS sensory room and low stimulus room.

Our Core Principles of Support

  • High Expectations: We hold the same ambitious goals for children with SEND as we do for all our pupils, providing the necessary scaffolding to help them get there.

  • Tailored Learning Journeys: We recognise that ‘one size does not fit all.’ We take different steps and apply specific interventions at various stages of a child's education to match their personal development.

  • Inclusion & Equality: We ensure that our school environment and curriculum are accessible, fostering a sense of belonging for every child.

Ordinarily Available Provision

At Woodlands, we believe every child deserves to thrive. To help you understand how we support all our pupils, we have put together this guide to our Ordinarily Available Provision (OAP).

What is Ordinarily Available Provision?

Think of OAP as our ‘Universal Offer’. It is the high standard of support and teaching that every parent should expect as standard in any Woodlands classroom.

Our Goal: To ensure every child receives the right support at the right time by removing barriers to learning.

The Four Pillars of Our Classrooms

  • High-Quality Teaching (HQT): Also known as ‘Quality First Teaching’, this is the foundation of every lesson.

  • Inclusive Environment: We use visual timetables, clear routines, and sensory-aware spaces to make everyone feel welcome.

  • Adaptive Teaching: We don't believe in ‘one size fits all’. We adjust tasks, use scaffolds like word banks, and use flexible grouping to help children succeed.

  • Technology: We use standard tools like laptops, Chromebooks, and dyslexia pens to empower our learners.
